Adorers: Reflecting the ‘Yes’ of Mary and St. Maria Micaela in our mission

The Annunciation, the “Yes” of the Virgin Mary, together with that of St. Maria Micaela, serves as a model for the Sisters Adorers, Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament and of Charity.

On the Solemnity of the Annunciation, the Church contemplates Mary’s “Yes”, a transcendental milestone in the history of salvation. At the Angel Gabriel’s announcement, the Virgin Mary humbly and trustingly accepted God’s will to be the Mother of Jesus, the Savior of the world. This “Yes” was not only an act of obedience, but also of profound love and total dedication to the mission God entrusted to her.

In addition to this witness of Our Lady, in a similar way, the Adorer Family tries to reflect the “Yes” of St. Maria Micaela. In 1850, after she heard God’s expression “I want you in my work”, she clearly interpreted the Lord’s will for her life.  From that moment on, she went to live with the women she welcomed in the house-college she had founded in Madrid in 1845.

With courage and charity, our foundress decided to dedicate her entire life to the service of women in situation of prostitution, seeing in them the face of the suffering Christ and offering her life to restore their dignity and hope.

Both Mary´s, each in her own historical context, responded to God’s call with an unconditional self-giving that transformed their lives and those of many others. In the Annunciation, Mary of Nazareth becomes the ark of the covenant, and, in her own passage, St. Maria Micaela becomes an instrument of love and mercy for women excluded in the society of her time.

The Adorer Family is called to follow these two excellent examples of faith and service in the mission of Adoration and Liberation bequeathed to us by our foundress. May Mary’s “Yes” and that of St. Maria Micaela inspire us to listen and respond to God’s will in our own lives, serving those women whom society has forgotten with love, respect and dignity.
