Annual Report of the Sisters Adorers 2022: More than 8,000 women served by our Social Work

The Congregation of the Sisters Adorers, Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament and of Charity, publish the Annual Report of Activities for 2022 to coincide with the feast of our foundress, St. Maria Micaela, on June 15.

It describes the social and educational work that we carry out in 24 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and America, with special attention to the accompaniment of women who suffer exploitation, violence and other situations of exclusion.

Throughout 2022 a total of 8,410 women have been assisted by the Social Work of the Adorers, of whom 3,745 are from Europe and Africa, 3,490 from America and 1,175 from Asia. The majority of them, 7,179, are over 18 years of age.

Some of the main situations for which women access this care are prostitution (3,256), social exclusion (1,791), human trafficking (1,069), lack of protection (815) or gender violence (707).

The Sisters Adorers have 86 Social Programmes in order to offer alternatives for the reception, formation and promotion of these women. In addition, they have 35 Teaching Centres, where they provide education and training in values to more than 14,000 children and adolescents, giving priority to the vulnerable population; and 5 Residences, where they do the same for 180 young women university students or workers.

In terms of endowment resources, women have been sheltered: 5,487 in community social care centres; 1,590 in production centres or workshops; 850 in shelters; 483 in housing.

All this work is carried out by a team of 248 Sisters, 506 contracted staff and 448 volunteers.

The Sisters Adorers are an international religious congregation founded by St. Maria Micaela in 1856 to respond to an urgent need of her time: to liberate women oppressed by prostitution. Since then, we have expanded our mission to other realities that affect the dignity and freedom of women, based on Adorers’ Pedagogy and with a Human Rights approach.

Our charism is grounded on two pillars: Adoration and Liberation. From Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, from its Eucharistic experience, germinates our mission within the Catholic Church to accompany and promote the Liberation of women: “In adoration we learn to love our young women and to work and live for them” (Constitutions 13).
