8th September: St. Maria Micaela and Nocturnal Adoration

On 8 September 1859 St. Maria Micaela established nocturnal Adoration for the Congregation of Sisters Adorers, Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament and of Charity.

This is an important milestone in the life of the saint and in the history of the Congregation, since the spirituality and charism of the foundress and of the Adorers are based on the Adoration of the Lord present in the Eucharist, which leads us to give our lives for the Liberation of Women in the situation of prostitution and other forms of exploitation.

In 1851, Micaela established daytime adoration in the school-house, taking turn every half an hour with the teachers and the young women who lived there. However, her deepest desire was to have the Blessed Sacrament exposed day and night in her houses: she wanted nocturnal adoration for her Adorers.

In Relación de favores, the saint herself describes the process leading to the attainment of this goal of perpetual adoration:

“Many times in prayer the Lord made me understand how I felt the loneliness in which I was in the churches, and I understood, that I wept bitterly for this loneliness, and the promises that He would make with His help that here and in all the Colleges He would keep her company day and night, to indemnify her from the general forgetfulness of the people, which I felt so vehemently and bitterly” (13).

For a whole year, the Lord urged me without letting me know what He wanted from me, and then I understood that what the Lord wanted was a continuous watch and vigil for what He was urging me to do. And as I did not know what He wanted, since I could not find a way to carry out what I believed the Lord wanted, and the more He urged me, the less I knew, I asked Him to clarify it.

One day when it seemed that the Lord and I were very confident, and as if I were in charge, I said to Him: ‘Well, Lord, tell me what you want. Reparation and adoration’. I was still at odds with the Lord who was in gratitude; I found it impossible, impracticable, and unachievable, I could not find the way; and I said to him: ‘Lord, have you not done everything in this house? Do you not know that I do not know? What do you expect from me, my God? Arrange it, O Lord, and make it known to me in such a way that I can do it. I went round and round about the business without daring to consult it…. When I came out of prayer one evening, which I redoubled for the purpose, I found that when I went to supper, the Adorers were asking with a thousand prayers and protests for adoration that night, the only thing that was stopping me; I had said nothing to anyone, I was surprised, so I went to prayer, to consult with God, and everything that I had found it impossible and difficult, melted like salt in water, everything was now very simple and able, and I separated with great energy the obstacles, which did not cease to present themselves, some of them serious. Moreover, the perpetual Adoration was installed on 8 September 1859” (48).

Adoration is a source of grace and strength for the Sisters Adorers, we follow the example and charism of our foundress.
