For over a decade, Sr. Asha Nayak has embraced the reality of women living in the most marginalized neighborhoods of Mumbai (India), especially in the red-light district areas. Her choice has not been one of mere presence, but of a deep closeness that flows from the Adorer charism: Adoration and Liberation.
Sr. Asha Nayak, Adorer in Mumbai: A Vocation in Service of the Most Forgotten
Born in Odisha (India), Sr. Asha joined the Congregation in 1995, made her first profession in 1999, and her perpetual vows in 2005. In 2011 she began her mission with women in prostitution in Goa, and later in the neighborhoods of Turbhe, Ghatkopar, Grant Road, and Kamathipura—some of the oldest and most vulnerable areas in Mumbai.
In these difficult environments, marked by poverty and exploitation, Sr. Asha has made her presence a sign of hope. Her daily commitment is centered on listening, accompanying, and extending a hand to women who seek to rebuild their lives, often alongside their children.
Spaces of Welcome and Hope in the Adorer Mission in Mumbai
With the support of the Adorer Social Work, Sr. Asha has initiated a community center where women find a safe place to learn, share, and regain confidence.
These centers offer sewing and embroidery workshops, professional training, and psychological and spiritual support, while their children receive literacy classes from volunteer teachers.
These initiatives have opened real paths to freedom, helping to break cycles of vulnerability and exclusion for many women. Some now run their own sewing businesses, while others work with local NGOs or in community programs.
To Adore in Order to Liberate: The Heart of Sr. Asha Nayak
The strength of this mission springs from the Adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist. Through it, Sr. Asha encounters women trapped by exploitation and abandonment.
For her, every gesture of kindness is a sign of God’s presence; every encounter, a sign of hope. The women call her “Didi” (older sister) because in her they find someone who listens and accompanies without judging.
Her life is a testimony that Adoring and Liberating are two inseparable dimensions of the same Love. Where suffering seems to have the final word, Sr. Asha embodies the tenderness of a God who forgets no one.
Light in the Darkness: The Adorer Footprint in Mumbai
Sr. Asha Nayak’s work reflects the heart of the Adorer mission: a presence that Adores and accompaniment that trusts in the strength of women to achieve Liberation.
In the narrow hallways and noisy streets of Mumbai, her dedication is a beacon of compassion that reminds us no one is forgotten in God’s eyes.
With simplicity, aware that she receives more than she gives, she sustains processes of hope, helping many women rediscover their dignity and build a freer and more just life.
