International Day of Non-Violence: Join Adorers on the Road to Liberation

Did you know that almost 1 in 3 women in the world has been a victim of violence? On the International Day of Non-Violence, we invite you to join Adorers in the struggle for a future free of violence for all women.

October 2, the International Day of Non-Violence instituted by the UN in 2007, invites us to reflect on the struggle for a world where violence has no place. Inspired by the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, this day takes on profound meaning for Adorers as it resonates deeply with our mission to liberate, promote and integrate women in situations of prostitution, trafficking, exploitation and other forms of violence.

Indeed, according to UN Women, it is estimated that, worldwide, 736 million women – almost 1 in 3 – have been victims of physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their lifetime (30% of women aged 15 and over).

In 2023, we attended 9,235 women in 24 countries around the world, whose main situations for which they accessed this care are: prostitution, poverty and social exclusion, human trafficking, lack of protection, gender-based violence or sexual abuse. In all these contexts, violence, both physical and psychological, is part of women’s lives.

We, Adorers, are committed to changing this reality. We believe that non-violence will only be possible when all women live free from fear and coercion, when they have the opportunity to live a full and meaningful life. Together we want to contribute to reducing these global numbers.

The Mission of Adorers: Liberation and Empowerment

At Adorers we accompany each woman we serve in her process of liberation. We work tirelessly to offer them a way out of situations of exploitation and violence. We provide them with a safe environment, support in their recovery process, and tools to empower themselves and rebuild their lives.

Our commitment to the cause of non-violence is evident in each of our Welfare Projects. Through education, psychological care, legal advice and job training, we offer them possibilities to regain their autonomy and self-esteem, to integrate and participate in their community.

Testimony of Ana, her path to liberation

Ana, from Gambia, tells us her story of overcoming her situation. She arrived in Spain deceived by a woman who promised her a job and kept her locked up for 6 months, forcing her to prostitute herself and threatening her: “The day you escape from here you will not come back, you will die and I will come for your family. The day you go to the police and tell them anything, I will kill you. You can’t escape”.

Ana’s is a story full of hope, she finally managed to escape from this situation and began to rebuild her present and her future. On this path of liberation she was accompanied by the Adorers’ project in Burgos: “Everything was difficult, but this house has helped me to achieve a new life”.

Today, Ana’s testimony is a reminder that, when we join forces, we can put an end to the spiral of violence. Each woman we serve at Adorers is one more step towards a world where violence has no place. Together we can build that future.
