On December 2, the world and Adorers commemorate International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. This date, established by the UN, not only calls us to reflect on the past, but to face a stark reality: slavery has not disappeared. In the 21st century, millions of people are still victims of human trafficking, forced labour, forced marriage and other forms of modern slavery.
At Adorers, we work tirelessly to combat this reality. This day reminds us why our mission is crucial: to restore dignity, freedom and hope to those who have been violated by this scourge. Find out how we work to change lives and how you can join the fight.
What is modern slavery?
Slavery still exists today in less visible but equally devastating forms. According to the International Labour Organisation, more than 50 million people live in situations of extreme exploitation. Many of them are women and girls trapped in trafficking networks for sexual or labour exploitation.
Among the most common forms of modern slavery are:
- Human trafficking: Women, men, boys and girls are exploited for sexual or labour purposes.
- Forced labour: People forced to work under threat and without fair wages.
- Forced marriage: Women and girls forced to marry without their consent.
Poverty, lack of opportunity and gender inequality are factors that perpetuate these inhumane practices. These people are not just statistics, they are lives taken away, dreams cut short and voices silenced.
The mission of Adorers: accompanying the rebuilding of lives
At Adorers, our mission is clear: the Adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist and the Liberation of women in situations of prostitution, trafficking and other forms of violence and exploitation. Through our Social Work, we accompany and support women victims of trafficking and exploitation so that they can regain their freedom, autonomy and dignity.
In our comprehensive programmes, we accompany their processes with:
- Shelter and protection: Safe spaces where women can heal physically, psychologically and emotionally.
- Legal assistance: Specialised service that offers women objective information to help them make decisions about their specific circumstances.
- Training and reintegration into the workplace: Tools for women to rebuild their lives and become economically independent.
- Psychological and spiritual accompaniment: Comprehensive support that encompasses body, mind and spirit.
Each testimony of recovery motivates us to move forward. Women who came to our projects with deep wounds, today have new reasons to live and dream. Each one of them who manages to rebuild her life takes one more step towards a world without modern slavery.
How can you help on the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery?
The fight against modern slavery challenges all of us. Here are some ways in which you can be part of the change:
- Get informed and raise awareness: Share information about human trafficking and its consequences.
- Support our mission: Through donations, volunteering or collaborations, you can contribute directly to the work we do. You can find out how to do this here.
- Be a conscious consumer: Check the provenance of the products you buy and support companies committed to fair labour practices.
A future free of slavery is possible
International Day for the Abolition of Slavery reminds us that we all have a role to play in the struggle for a world free from exploitation. At Adorers, every action counts, from rescue and support to prevention and awareness-raising.
Join us in building a future where freedom and human dignity are real universal rights.
