On November 23, 2024, Ann Mutuku took a decisive step in her vocational journey by making her first profession as a religious Adorer, Handmaid of the Blessed Sacrament and of Charity.
The Eucharistic ceremony, which took place at St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in Madrid, Spain, was a moment of deep emotion for Ann and the entire Adorer Family, who welcomed her with great joy. It was celebrated at 13:00 (local time) by the Claretian missionary and professor of the Theological Institute of Religious Life (ITVR), Emeterio Chaparro.
Ann was accompanied by the community of the Novitiate of Peñagrande, as well as by sisters from various communities of Madrid (Casa Madre, Carabanchel and Agastia) and other nearby cities, such as Valencia, Ciudad Real, Sevilla, Málaga y Salamanca.
Sister Antonia López, Provincial Superior, received Ann’s vows and Sisters Carmen Pascual and Pilar Rodríguez acted as witnesses, thus sealing her commitment for one year.
After the Eucharist, a lunch was held in the halls of the nearby school, where Ann and the attendees shared a few hours of joy and fraternity.
What does first religious profession mean?
The first Religious Profession is a crucial moment in the life of a Novice. With her vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, Ann consecrates herself fully to God and to the service of others.
With her ‘yes’, Ann Mutuku becomes a Junior Sister within the Congregation, reaffirming her commitment to the female religious vocation and to the Adorer mission of Eucharistic Adoration and Liberation of women in situations of prostitution, human trafficking and other forms of violence.
The Adorers Family, formed of sisters and lay people, has been working since 1856 with women who have faced contexts of vulnerability. We focus on the promotion and social insertion of women, restoring their dignity and offering them new life opportunities. We are present in 24 countries around the world and in 2023 our Social Work served more than 9,000 women.
Ann on her first religious profession: A ‘dense and unforgettable’ milestone
Ann describes this moment as a ‘dense and unforgettable’ milestone, filled with ‘deep joy and overflowing joy’. Fascinated by the Adorers charism, she says that becoming a religious is a ‘grace from God’ that brings her to the fullness of her life.
The new Junior Sister also wanted to address a few words to women, young and ‘not so young’, who feel the vocational call: ‘It is worthwhile to follow Jesus Christ in religious life, not because it is better than other lives, but because when this call comes, the heart is not calm until it responds generously to God. Do not be afraid to respond. Risking your life to win other lives for Christ makes you truly free and happy’.
In closing, Ann encouraged those who wish to know more about the Congregation, reminding them that the Adorers are a ‘Family that walks in Hope and rejoices in its Mission’.
