25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, is not just a date on the calendar. It is a time to continue to make visible an issue that affects millions of women around the world and to reach out to those who seek to break the silence.
According to the UN, violence against women and girls remains one of the most widespread and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, it is estimated that nearly one in three women have been victims of physical and sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
In 2023, around 51,100 women and girls worldwide were killed by intimate partners or other family members. That is, 1 woman was murdered every 10 minutes. This is a scourge that has intensified in different settings, including the workplace and online spaces, and has been exacerbated by conflict and climate change.
The mission of the Adorers, to accompany women in their processes of liberation from violence
Precisely, the mission of the Congregation of the Adorers is the Adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist and the accompaniment of women in their respective processes of Liberation from situations such as prostitution, human trafficking and other forms of gender violence. In 2023, the Social Work of the Adorers, present in 24 countries on 4 continents, assisted 9,235 women who were going through these types of circumstances.
The entire Adorers’ Family wishes to take advantage of this day to amplify the voices of those who have lived through and overcome situations of violence. Women who, with their courage, teach us that pain can be transformed into strength, that silence can be broken and that together we can build a future free of violence.
Stories of resilience and hope
This year we have prepared a special campaign in which we will share 4 videos with real testimonies of women survivors who have received assistance in one of the programmes of our Welfare Projects around the world. These videos answer 4 key questions such as:
What was the most difficult moment you faced and how did you overcome it?
What warning signs did you notice before the violence started?
What resources or supports were most helpful during your recovery process?
What message would you share with other women who are going through the same thing?
Diane, Lucia, Rosa and Ania’s words not only challenge and inspire us, but also offer valuable tools for other women who may fall into these situations: recognising the signs of violence, seeking help and building support networks.
Break the silence, join the struggle
As Adorers we know that real change is only possible when each person decides not to ignore what is happening around us. That is why we invite you to be part of this campaign:
- Share the videos of the survivors’ stories: Every visualisation can reach someone who needs to hear this message.
- Recognise the signs: Learn to identify the signs of control, manipulation or abuse to act in time.
- Be supportive: Support women facing these situations with respect and empathy. If you want to do it together with us, check our website.
25N does not end at the end of the day. It is a constant reminder that we must work together to build a world where no woman lives in fear.
If you need help, you are not alone
If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, remember that there are resources and people willing to help. At Adorers, we continue to work to create safe and protected spaces, providing support to those who need it most. We offer an intervention model of comprehensive care, considering women as the protagonists of their life process, respecting their freedom and dignity, welcoming them unconditionally, rejecting any form of violence.
