Learning from the Child Jesus: Micaela’s wisdom in Bethlehem

On 1 January, the date on which we celebrate the birth of Saint Maria Micaela, the Adorer Family turns its gaze to the source that shaped her spirituality: the humility and transforming strength of the Child Jesus.

Among the many letters written by our Foundress, one stands out in particular: the letter dated 24 December 1864, written in Santander (Spain), in which Micaela contemplates the mystery of Bethlehem and recognizes it as a school of life, evangelical poverty, mercy and absolute trust in God. In this letter, the saint accepts and embraces with faith the situation she has been given to live.

The manger of Bethlehem as a place of learning

Micaela invites her daughters not to complain about poverty, because this is precisely how God chose to enter the world. The manger, the straw and the humble swaddling clothes that wrap the Child Jesus speak to her heart and fill her with joy and gratitude.

“Who, my daughters, would dare complain about the poverty so loved by the Child Jesus?” she writes in the letter addressed to Sr. María del Espíritu Santo, who was in Barcelona. “What must poverty have, that the Lord loved it so? How rich we poor are for the love of God! The world flees from the poor and from poverty, and I seek it and am greedy for it, as for my greatest treasure,” she adds.

For her, the manger of Bethlehem reveals that God’s greatness is not found in abundance, but in tenderness and in the richness of one who embraces fragility.

Micaela does not contemplate a distant Child, but a God who makes Himself small and vulnerable to show us the path of merciful love.

“I am happy in my helplessness and in my poverty; only one sorrow pains me, and I will say it, yes, I will say it, so that my daughters may appreciate the happiness we have in our houses. The Most Blessed Sacrament here is contraband. I do not see my beloved, my Lord, my God and my all, exposed, except one day in two months.”

The Child Jesus, teacher of mercy

In the second part of the letter, addressing her “little daughters”—that is, the students, young women and women who lived in the houses of the Congregation— with the tenderness of a mother, she urges them to learn the lessons taught by the Child Jesus from “the divine chair of the manger of Bethlehem. Jesus came to save their souls, and mine with theirs.”

The cries, tears and weakness of the Child God express for Micaela a call to compassion and self-giving (“He seems to ask us for souls to warm Him from the cold that reigns in the world”), especially for those who live in loneliness, abandonment or lack of love.

In these words we recognize the heart of her charism: a spirituality born at the feet of the Tabernacle and learned before the manger of Bethlehem, where poverty is not a cause for complaint, but a place of encounter with God.

A message that remains relevant for the Adorer Family

Today, on the anniversary of her birth, the words of Saint Mary Micaela continue to be a light for Adoration and Liberation:

  • They invite us to look at Jesus in His smallness.
  • They remind us that dignity is born of love received and given.
  • They encourage us to care for, protect and accompany those who live in fragility.

May the Child Jesus, teacher of mercy, also kindle in us the fire of love that moved Micaela’s heart.
